With Kenneth McLeish, I co-wrote A Pocket Guide to Shakespeare’s Plays; with Carole Woddis, A Pocket Guide to Twentieth Century Drama; and, with Michael Pennington, A Pocket Guide to Ibsen, Chekhov and Strindberg (all Faber and Faber).
My So You Want to be a Theatre Director? was published by Nick Hern Books as was The Complete Brecht Toolkit and The Doll’s House: from Page to Stage.
A Guide to the Plays of Bertolt Brecht was published by Methuen and The Well Read Play by Oberon Books.
Performance Editions
Oberon published my performance editions of King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night and Hamlet, as well as Pinero's The Second Mrs Tanqueray.
Individual Chapters
I contributed a chapter on acting Brecht for the LAMDA guide to acting styles and to NHB’s My First Play birthday collection. I also wrote a chapter in Tim Cribb's Bloomsbury and British Theatre: the Marlowe Story.

I'm currently writing The Golden Smile, a study of learning disabilities in culture and society.

I've written articles, reviews and obituaries for The Evening Standard, The Guardian, The Sunday Telegraph, The Independent and The Sunday Times.
